Subtitle: Oh, my dear friend, I hope you are sitting down comfortably for this one. I see posts and warnings like this circulating, and while I usually tell people not to panic, this is one instance where we need to pay very close attention and stay alert.
Let me tell you about the first time I heard about this scam.
I was in my late twenties, and I was reading an article about car safety. I learned about a disturbing trend: criminals were using plastic bottles to lure drivers out of their cars.
I was shocked. I had no idea this was happening.
How the Scam Works
The Setup. Thieves wedge an empty plastic bottle between your tire and the wheel well while your car is parked.
The Noise. When you start driving, the bottle creates a loud crinkling/clicking sound against the rotating tire.
The Trap. The noise is designed to make you think something is wrong with your car, prompting you to pull over and investigate.
The Theft. When you get out to check the noise, criminals either:
-
Steal your purse/wallet/phone from your car
-
Rob you directly
-
Carjack you
The takeaway. This is a real threat.
The solution. Be aware and stay safe.
Why It Works
The element of surprise. You’re not expecting it.
The noise is alarming. It sounds like something is wrong.
You pull over. You want to investigate.
You leave your car. You are vulnerable.
The criminals act quickly. They take advantage of your vulnerability.
The takeaway. It’s a well-planned trap.
The solution. Be aware.
