Directions and Instructions
- In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté them until they are beautifully caramelized, which should take about 10 to 15 minutes. Once they’re done, remove the onions from the skillet and set them aside.
- In the same skillet, form the ground beef into two sturdy patties. Season them generously with salt and pepper. Cook the patties for approximately 4 to 5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness.
- While the patties are cooking, whisk together the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder in a small bowl. This magical mixture will serve as your secret sauce, so mix well and set aside.
- As the patties near completion, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty. Cover the skillet briefly to allow the cheese to melt into a deliciously gooey layer.
- Once the cheese is melted, remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
- In the same skillet, add an additional tablespoon of butter. Place two slices of rye bread in the skillet and generously spread some of the secret sauce on each slice. Top each slice with a cheesy patty and a portion of the caramelized onions.
- Close the sandwiches with another slice of rye bread, spread with more secret sauce on the outside, and grill until they are a lovely golden brown.
- Carefully flip the sandwiches and grill the other side until it’s also golden brown and the cheese is perfectly melted.
- Remove from the skillet, cut the sandwiches in half, and serve with the remaining secret sauce on the side for dipping.
Notes or Tips
- If you prefer a bit of heat, add a dash of hot sauce or some chopped jalapeños to the secret sauce.
- Feel free to swap out the Swiss cheese for your favorite type, such as cheddar or provolone.
- For extra flavor, consider adding fresh herbs like parsley or chives to the secret sauce.
