Why drying laundry indoors can compromise your respiratory health

Drying laundry indoors is an aggravating factor in ambient humidity.
Drying clothes indoors poses a real risk to air quality and health. Placing damp laundry on a radiator significantly increases the room’s humidity level, by up to 30%. This excess moisture creates an ideal environment for the growth of mold spores, such as Aspergillus, which increases the risk of contamination.

For example, a full washing machine contains about two liters of water, which the wet laundry gradually releases into the room where it dries. While most people have a natural resistance to these spores and are not affected, this is unfortunately not the case for everyone.

People with asthma, for example, are particularly susceptible: they can experience severe respiratory attacks accompanied by a persistent cough. Furthermore, anyone with a weakened immune system is much more vulnerable to pulmonary aspergillosis.

Preventing risks: prioritize outdoor or mechanical drying
To minimize these risks, it is strongly recommended to dry your laundry outdoors whenever possible. Otherwise, a tumble dryer remains the best indoor alternative, as it effectively removes moisture without increasing the ambient humidity level.

By adopting these simple precautions, you not only protect the air quality in your home, but also your health and that of your loved ones.
